Kauaeranga Valley

Kauaeranga Valley near Thames has a landmark DOC visitor centre, their ‘gateway to the Coromandel’. The old visitor centre burned down in 2001 and when the new building was completed (with an iconic kauri dam entrance), Paradigm with Rick Pearson Associates and Chris Gaskin of Natural Lines designed the new interpretation. Still a landmark species in the area, the story of the kauri anchors the extensively researched themes which include geology, gold, local species, habitats and biodiversity. Displayed both indoors and outside (with durable vandal-proof materials), much of the information, including maps and safety advice, is available to visitors when the centre is closed. A cluster of coloured rings routed into the deck graphically shows some of the kauri giants we’ve lost forever.
